December 4 2007 – 27 days until new years – 20 days until Christmas (why is Christmas capitalised in the English language?) – 4 days until my 21st birthday

It actually is December. It’s not only the 1st of December but already the 4th! Where have I been the past few weeks? It all just seems to have passed me by. I actually have to look at my wonderful Mac iCal to remember what has happened the past few weeks.
I don’t even remember writing my last blog, so I will just start at the beginning of November. Thursday, November 1st, 2007 I actually found myself going to see the musical Cats at the Empire Theatre in Liverpool. My friend from Switzerland called me an hour before the show and asked if I would like to join him. I made other plans for the night, but it seemed like the best opportunity to actually go see one of the most famous musicals ever made. I am not a particularly huge fan of musicals, apart from Grease and maybe Dirty Dancing – the movies, not musical shows – but I thought I should take the chance to see it.
The big question, “Did I like it? Would Cats change my views on musical theatre?” The answer is NO. Yes, it was entertaining, and yes, I can understand how some people love seeing such performances, but for me the performances are so fake and just so dishonest. Especially when they are trying to make a character look particularly cool by supporting the immensely pop tunes with rock riffs, make it the cheesiest songs I have ever heard! And then there is the constant repetition of certain tunes… It’s just not for me. But I am glad I went finally, proving that musical theatre isn’t for me.
The Cats experience is followed by a fabulous performance of the Scottish 30+ band The Glas Vegas at the Barfly. I first heard of them when I was at In The City this year, and it got to me. First I hated it, and then I loved it. And the performance proved that these guys have something extremely interesting going for them – even though they may be older than the average successful band these days and certainly don’t have the good looks for teen magazines. But something like the Rolling Stone and maybe a bit of NME would love it (if I am not mistaken, their manager is an editor at NME… what a coincidence a guy from NME introduced it at In The City…)
The weekend after was followed by 2 house parties. I made an appearance at both for an hour or so before getting a good night rest. I only remember it being a very exhausting week, because I was still recovering from In the City followed by the hectic reading week featuring 24 hours in Munich, catching up with family and friends, Otto and Travis show, finalized by 2 days in Hamburg seeing my best friend, having a drink, going shopping and seeing the doctor for the annual check-up. Back on the plane. It was a quick visit. Too quick.
Anyway. I am drifting off.
Monday, November 5, 2007 was the big bon fire night in Britain – the day the British celebrate Guy Fawkes failing miserably at blowing up the Parliament. So off we go to Sefton Park to see the 20-minute firework display. I loved it! It was a lot better than last years, but it still wasn’t as nicely co-ordinated as any German fireworks – by far. I took some  great pictures which you can see here… http://www.flickr.com/photos/asvlm/
Thursday, November 8th 2007 marked the day I went to see Kate Nash. What a sweet girl. Very British. Very cute. Enjoyable. The room was filled with so many girls in flowery dresses (even though it was absolutely freezing outside!) that I stopped counting. A couple of boyfriends had to show up as well, who agreed to tag along with their girlfriend, probably because she thought it would just be such a sweet idea! And some guys actually sang along and danced with their girlfriends. How cute.
And then November 9th 2007 the big garlic mansion twins party took place at my friend’s house. It was fantastic! 7 rooms on 3 floors were filled with people, conversing, dancing, singing, eating, drinking, and friends playing live sets the whole night. Another house party must be held asap. A must.
The following week I packed my bags to go to London for a day or two – just because London is fun and a friend from Germany was in town. I was persuaded to spend the weekend on a bus, travelling the British Island. I enjoyed it so much, that I absolutely hated the day I had to get back to my regular life. The autumn depression had set in and I didn’t know what was going on anymore. Even though my very good friend Josefine came to visit me for most of the following week, the work was piling up and I did not enjoy anything anymore. It is a horrible state.
I was looking forward to my break in Germany. I flew out to Frankfurt on the 29th to see my family and friends in Frankfurt. With work still being on my mind, I managed to spend a great deal of quality time in the city I lived in for two months this summer. I enjoyed it a lot.
And there we are. December 4th 2007.
The finance exam is over and done with. There is only another 3000 words to write for my production management essay. And my birthday celebrations are all in order now. Dinner tables booked, champagne is already cooling in the fridge and the outfits are already planned. The only thing left is to get a fabulous cake for the big day. If I can find the right ingredients I will possibly make my beloved lemon birthday cake I used to always get when I was living back in Germany. We will see.

So far, so good.

PS: This have been 1020 words written. Enough now. More to come soon.

Just a quick update on any art recommendations:

Films:
The Darjeeling Ltd. – great story of 3 brothers travelling together in India. Incredibly funny. Incredibly genius. Incredibly recommendable.
Heima – Documentary on Sigur Ros new album. I haven’t seen it but heard lots about it.
The Assassination of Jesse James – 3 hours of Brad Pitt and Casey Affleck. Both incredibly good looking but three hours is even too much for me. The whole story could have been told in half the time.

Music:
Jamie Lidell – English man living in Berlin. Funky stuff! It’s got a bit of a modern Prince feel to it. Just not as genius as Prince, but nothing could ever live up to the genius that is Prince.
Iron & Wine –“Boy With A Coin”. What a tune!
The John Butler Trio – “What You Want” from their 2004 album Sunrise Over Sea. Bring on the strings and melancholy!
The new Radiohead. I love it. Love it. Love it.

Re-invent: Madonna “Ray Of Light”. Absolutely fantastic album. Still.
Lenny Kravitz “Mama Said” my all-time top 5 favourite!

In The City 2007

November 2, 2007 · 1 Comment

Apart from all the movie going (see previous blog) my reading week (Vorlesungsfreie Woche) has been an absolute amazing time. First off it was the In The City weekend in Manchester. In The City is the biggest live music convention in England (as far as I know). Three days live music blasts in every bar/club/space in Manchester’s city centre – not that it isn’t already a true music mecca, but during In The City 600 unsigned bands play in about 150 venues. It is madness.
In addition to all the bands playing, a conference is held in the Midland hotel with discussions and talks by and with various industry people. Some talks are very interesting, whereas others constantly repeat themselves, like the future of record companies…
Anyway – Back to the live gigs.

I managed to go see many many many many many gigs, some were bands people have recommended, others I’ve heard of before and then there were the gigs that you just randomly walked into.

Maple State & Das Pop at the Night & Day

I went down to the Night & Day to see two bands that people have been talking about and who conveniently enough are managed by a friend of mine.
Maple State are young lads from the Northwest playing an interesting mix of progressive rock and fun times. I’m sure we’ll see them more often in the future.

http://www.myspace.com/themaplestate

Das Pop are a begian/french band who have already got an incredible fan base in Germany. They are fun like their name suggests. Have a listen at http://www.daspop.be/

Other highlights of ITC were:

The Naturals @ One Central
A very energetic foursome, who are all around 16 years old or so. I wasn’t very impressed by their sound, because it was once again, fast indie pop rock…and this sound is slowly coming to an end. But considering their age, energy and an interesting aproach to structuring songs, they are definitely something to look out for.

http://www.myspace.com/naturalsmusic

Noah and the Whale @ One Central
Now here’s the band that made my ITC weekend. They were also the most talked about band that day, that everyone wanted to see – even Emma Banks from CAA made an appearance (she is THE female booking agent of this industry), maybe because CAA has already signed a booking contract with them… Anyway. I had no idea what to expect, only the anticipation that this would be a good one. Something different. And it was. A wonderful mix of folk, country and popular music with delicate and also fast songs. And the singer’s voice… Just fabulous! Have a listen on myspace and see for yourself.

http://www.myspace.com/noahandthewhale

Friendly Fires @ Saki Bar
They were part of last year’s ITC and have been touring the country ever since. After listening to their demo of “Photobooth” on ITC’s itunes selection, I was in love. Fast, funky power pop – yes, I know, it’s been all over the place, at least in the UK, but they want to make you dance, dance, dance. The only problem many bands in the same genre have is that they don’t have the ability to keep up with the fast-pace sound. But Friendly Fire certainly had it going on. They were fast, they were fun, and they were incredibly tight. They blew me away at 2 am in a bar full of Manchester scene kids and A&R scouts… Manchester ‘underground’ craziness.

http://www.myspace.com/friendlyfires

Blind Archery Club @ Squares
I first heard of BAC from my Norwegian friend Birgitte. We were driving up to the Norwegian mountains over easter for my visit to the northern country, listening to BAC for most of the time. It is a pleasant pop music, great for a spring or fall afternoon in the living room. But I do admit, that it is probably too soft for the English market, but certainly fits their Norwegian heritage. And they are very nice lads, as all Norwegians are really.

http://www.myspace.com/blindarcheryclub
Other bands I went to go see:
Code Pie @ Squares
Canadian ska, hip-hop, something. A bit too crazy for my taste.

Dirty Circus @ Squares
I love Dirty Circus. Some say it is ‘just’ another Kasabian meets Joy Division but every time I see them, I get lost in their tunes. Sadly they got dropped by Sony BMG after a development deal… But DC, don’t give up! I think you are great.

http://www.myspace.com/dirtycircusmusic

Joy Vegas @ Studio
Liverpool heroes and ex- We See Foxes put on their fantastic rock show with the only “rockstar left on earth” (quote Lasse) called Mads from Norway The girls love him… But they are also a good band … Check it at: http://www.myspace.com/thejoyvegas

Rosie Taylor Project (acoustic) @ Bedlam
Lovely acoustic act. They’ve got potential but didn’t blow me away. Yet.

The Rosalitas
Uninteresting indie rock pop.

Sky Larkin
Don’t remember, that’s never a good sign..

The New 1920s @ Bar 38
How come so many great rock bands come from Wales? The New 1920s are one of the brand new bands coming from South Wales. They are slightly more pop than their fellow Welsh rockers, The Blackout, Kids In Glasshouses or Attack! Attack!. Their new single “Torpedo Libido” is such a catchy tune, I am already humming when I just think of it… And they are very nice lads, who have already toured with Lostprophets on their last German tour in winter 2006.

http://www.myspace.com/thenew1920

Other bands that were apparently very good, that I didn’t get to see:

The Grammatics >> http://www.myspace.com/grammatics

Twisted Wheel >> http://www.myspace.com/thetwistedwheel

AND then there is Glasvegas who might just be the band we’ll hear about soon. I’m heading to see them in concert tonight. Have a listen:

Just about 2 months I have been back in Liverpool and it feels like it’s only been a few weeks! So far it has been one big party. There are hardly any evenings where I stay in and just relax with some good music or a book. There are either private parties to attend, friend’s having a gig, dinner parties or general nights out in Liverpool. I’m having a fantastic time, but I am slowly needing a bit of a rest, stay in, do some work and FOCUS.

I just got an e-mail from CNN headline news stating that: — Tennis star Martina Hingis admits testing positive for cocaine during Wimbledon, but denies taking the drug.

Interesting, but is this really a headline news? As much as I love CNN, sometimes they have an interesting choice of what news to show and what not… Do we really care if Martina Hingis, who has disappeared from the tennis world long ago, took cocain during Wimbledon? If she had a great time, doing it, what the hell. There are so many coke heads living in the world, it surely wouldn’t surprise me if she did..

Anyway. So here I am, sitting at the lovely FACT (Foundation for the Arts and Creative Technology // museum // independent movie theatre!)- I absolutely adore it. I probably come here at least once a week to watch a movie. A few weeks ago it was Björk’s husband’s movie “Drawing Restraint 9”. It was interesting at first, absolutely fantastic visual shots taken in Japan, emphasized by no talking whatsoever throughout the whole movie. But sadly it just got more obscure by the minute, leaving me with nothing but question marks. Other moviegoers (yes, this actually is a word according to Microsoft Word, who would’ve known) seemed to have like it, but I just did not get it. And, it was the first digital movie I have seen in a cinema. The quality amazed me, but still I could tell that it wasn’t a proper movie from negatives because the rendering was weird and especially the colours looked different, somewhat artificial glowing a lot more… Maybe one just has to get used to it. At least there weren’t any fuzzies or other disturbing little things on the negatives.

Drawing Restraint 9 on IMDB

I also saw “Michael Clayton” a fantastic ‘lawyer’ movie with astonishing George Clooney. It isn’t the regular court movie you’d suspect, but a fabulous story emphasizing the characters, rather than the highly important case to be one. Go watch it!

Michael Clayton on IMDB

What else…

Oh yes, the absolutely sad but incredibly interesting movie “control” about the life and death of Ian Curtis. He was the lead singer in “Joy Division”, heroes of the Manchester music scene. Ian Curtis had a decent life in the Northwest. He had a job and got married at a young age. On the side, he went to many gigs, as all Englishmen do and started singing in “Joy Division”. One day the legendary Tony Wilson, Manchester’s music man, saw them play a gig and was instantly amazed singing them to his label “Factory Records”. They started touring across the nation. It turns out Ian Curtis has epilepsy and thus has to take many drugs. His life gets crazier and crazier and loses track of his old life. He then has an affair with a Belgian girl, played by Germany’s own Alexandra Maria Lara. His life gets out of hands, his marriage goes downhill, until he decide’s to commit suicide at the young age of 23.
It is an absolutely astonishing story, which you must go see!

CONTROL on IMDB

So much for the movie section.

There are many more to come this winter…

week 4

October 8, 2007 · Leave a Comment

The past three weeks have been incredibly exciting but also incredibly exhausting because of two simple words: Performance Workshop.
In groups of 20 (!) people, we had to develop a performance – not a play, not a musical (thank god!) but a life changing art experiment. It was difficult and incredibly exhausting. Discussing and experimenting with 20 people to create something special every day for at least 4, sometimes 7 hours was draining all my energy, resulting in me spilling pineapple juice all over my beloved macbook pro. Not such a good idea. I was in tears and devastation. BUT on the last day of performance workshop, THE BIG DAY of the actual performance, I turned on my mac and it actually worked! It was possibly one of the best days so far! Such a relief!
And today we got the results for our management project and I am doing the Contemporary Issues In Management Conference again – I’m loving it.
AND Birgitte has come over for a week, staying with Holly and myself  – the girls are back in town! It’s possibly the best thing, when your friends are coming to visit you. It is just fab. (If you are reading this, and you haven’t visited me yet, this is a hint! Come over ASAP!)

That’s it for now.
All’s well. Hope you are too.

I have decided to continue writing my blog in English, partly because I find it easier and my English and German friends can read it. Not forgetting the Norwegians and Jersey Beans! And any other nationality who can speak English really…

year 2

September 30, 2007 · Leave a Comment

…it has arrived. I have spent just about a month back in Liverpool and yes, I am enjoying it.

Next stop, university: We are in full force, doing mostly finance and of course lovely lovely performance workshop….. In Performance Workshop, we have 3 weeks to develop a ‚performance’ or installation with a life-changing meaning in a group of 20 (from all courses) .. It is a lot of work and you hate and love it at the same time. On Friday it will finally be over.

Apart from all the work I do manage to go out a lot, meeting a few freshers, getting to know even more people and generally enjoying myself. It is fantastic. And then there is fact, where I am having a glass of organic root beer at the moment. Fact manages to put on fantastic movies and installations. Last Thursday I also ended up going to Late Night at Tate, seeing some fantastic art combined with DJ and live music and free organic cains beer! Loved it.
The city is preparing for this years Turner Prize which will be held at the Tate Liverpool as well as the city’s 800th birthday (this year) AND (the big AND) capital of culture celebrations in 2008. Fantastically enough, the celebrations will begin with Liverpool – The Musical………………………. Why on earth they chose to make a MUSICAL, I don’t know. After all this city is better known for all the rock/indie/BAND live music… But we will also get to see Paul McCartney performing at Anfield in the summer. My my.

Concerts.

Music. Concerts. Music. I love it. This summer has been a fantastic experience. First there was the Rock am Ring and Rock im Park celebrations; a production I absolutely loved working on. And then there was Live Earth Germany. Possibly the most exciting and exhausting thing to have happened to me yet. All in all, I had a great 2 months working in Frankfurt with fantastic people and doing what I love.
After that I treated myself with three (3 !!!!!) shows of Prince in London. Absolutely amazing! There is noone who could compete with the genius of prince. No one. FACT. I am now collecting all Prince Albums on CD. I have about half, I’d say. I am getting there.

And then another weekend was spent in London for the Police at Twickenham Stadium. It was good, it was fun. Sadly Andy Summers did not play as well as I did back in the day, but Sting and Copeland surely made up for it.

Back in the NorthWest Holly and I enjoyed a smashing night out in Manchester to see Circa Survive. Front row, singing, dancing, drinking, fun! What a night….. If you don’t know circa survive yet, check it. I dare you to.

Next up is Kate Nash, the Sex Pistols and possibly NOFX (although I am not very fond of punk rock…….)

Oh, and the Chemical Brothers on Dec 9th as my birthday afterparty. Which leads me to my birthday weekend celebrations. As I said earlier, you definitely should come over and visit me. And here’s the ideal chance. My 21st birthday will be on Dec 8th, 2007, a Saturday.
On Friday there will be a party. Saturday will be friends and family hang out, presents and dinner party with more dancing after. And then there is he hangover brunch on Sunday with the massive finale of going to the chemical brothers. You don’t want to miss it!

That’s it for now. Have a good day!

Not to mention the hours spent in the bars outside!
I am excited.

November 16, 2006 · Leave a Comment

.. Teil 3 .. recovery .. Liverpool Music Week ..

November 11, 2006 · Leave a Comment

So. Jetzt reicht’s. Bis bald!
